Domain NamesCustomers need to know where to find you on the web. A domain name gives you or your company credibility and is another way to promote your business, rather than giving your server free publicity. With the explosion of web sites, domain names are becoming increasingly harder to come by. We have all heard tales about unscrupulous companies tying up domain names and selling the name for huge profits to businesses wanting to use them.
If you are remotely considering using the Internet and World Wide Web for your business, we highly recommend that you register your domain name as soon as possible. Once registered, you will own the domain name and no one else in the world will be able to get it. Domain names should be no more than 23 characters and describe your company or business. Currently you can register domain names up to 64 characters in length, however we do not recommend it, as some of the search engines will not index them, and domain names that long are easy to mistype. The first name to try is your business or product name (with no spaces between words). If that is already taken, try adding 'co' or 'inc' to the end of the name. If that does not work, try using something to describe your business or the name of your product line. Best of all be creative, but bear in mind that your potential customer needs to remember the name.
Included below are a list of sites where you can find out if a domain name is taken and then, if it isn't, you can claim it as your own. Each site differs in cost and user-friendliness, so click around a few of them to decide which one best suits your needs. Some even make suggestions for domain names based on words you type in.
